Neither instinct is a flaw, and treating everyone as if they need the same emotional temperature to perform well is, according to Asken and McMillen, one of the most common mistakes made by trainers and educators alike.
What makes this concept genuinely useful is that it’s not fixed. Experience changes the equation. Skills that have been rehearsed to the point of near-automaticity can withstand far more stress than skills that are newly learned, which is part of why seasoned clinicians can function under what amounts to real chaos while a novice in the same room struggles to think clearly. The nervous system doesn’t get smarter under pressure — it defaults to whatever has been trained into it. That’s not a discouraging thought; it’s a practical one. It means the goal isn’t to somehow will yourself into composure during the worst five minutes of someone’s day. It’s to understand, ahead of time, where your own performance lives.
