Meet Mrs. God: The Woman Who Dares to Question the Creator

FORTUNE Temp

What would happen if the person closest to God refused to simply accept everything He said?

That is one of the most intriguing ideas behind the author’s Mrs. God’s Tales of Creation: A Biblical Fantasy. At the center of the story is Rachel, the woman who becomes Mrs. God and who brings to that extraordinary role something the Creator may not have expected: skepticism, curiosity, wit and a relentless willingness to ask difficult questions.

Rachel is not introduced as a lifelong believer eagerly waiting for a divine calling. Quite the opposite. She describes herself as a former nonbeliever who grew up questioning conventional ideas about God and religion. Her transformation into Mrs. God therefore gives the story an immediate sense of irony. The woman who once doubted God’s existence eventually becomes the person closest to Him.

And closeness, in Rachel’s case, does not mean silence.

A Wife Who Wants Real Answers

Rachel’s relationship with God gives her an unusual freedom. She can ask the questions ordinary people have debated for centuries.

How powerful is God, really?

Can He make mistakes?

Why does suffering continue?

Does God know everything that will happen?

Can He become overwhelmed, lonely, uncertain or even afraid of failure?

Satinoff uses these questions to turn the traditional relationship between humanity and God on its head. Rather than presenting God only as an unreachable authority, the novel imagines Him as a figure with distinctly human emotions and vulnerabilities. Rachel sees Him as loving, sensitive, intelligent, imperfect and sometimes uncertain about His own abilities.

That is precisely what makes her role so important.

She does not merely admire God. She challenges Him.

At one point, Rachel becomes deeply concerned about the state of the world and believes her husband may be failing to use his powers to prevent humanity from sliding further into chaos. Instead of quietly accepting the situation, she resolves to confront Him and demand an explanation.

It is a wonderfully unconventional dynamic: Mrs. God staging what is essentially a cosmic intervention with the Creator Himself.

The “Godd Couple”

Some of the book’s most distinctive moments come through conversations between Rachel and God, whom she affectionately calls “G.”

Their exchanges can move from enormous philosophical questions to teasing married-couple banter in a matter of moments. They discuss God’s responsibilities, His mental state, His limitations, love, loneliness, prayer, human behavior and the contradictions surrounding ideas of divinity.

The result is part theological thought experiment, part comedy, part romance and part philosophical debate.

God is not always the one providing answers, either. Sometimes He admits uncertainty. Sometimes Rachel offers the sharper observation. And sometimes both characters simply circle around a question that may have no satisfying answer at all.

That uncertainty is central to the book’s appeal.

A Different Kind of Biblical Fantasy

Mrs. God’s Tales of Creation does not ask readers to approach its ideas as doctrine. It invites them to imagine, question, laugh, debate and reconsider familiar assumptions.

Rachel is the perfect guide for that journey because she never loses her instinct to question even after meeting God face-to-face.

For readers who enjoy unconventional fantasy, religious satire, philosophical speculation and stories willing to ask uncomfortable questions, the author offers a character unlike almost any other.

Mrs. God may love the Creator.

But that certainly does not mean she is afraid to challenge Him.
