Their modern knowledge and unfamiliar behavior make them outsiders, but their growing attachment to the community gradually changes how they view their assignment.
As the men become involved in protecting villagers, investigating mysterious attacks and gathering information about an approaching summit, they begin to understand that technological superiority does not necessarily create moral authority. Their mission becomes more complicated as friendships develop, secrets emerge and loyalty to their commanders conflicts with concern for the people around them.
Christensen strengthens the novel’s unusual setting by placing futuristic elements beside historical ones. Advanced communications, interplanetary history, military intelligence, sophisticated weapons and orbiting technology exist in a world still filled with castles, horses, Roman soldiers, tribal leaders and traditional villages. Rather than keeping these elements separate, the novel allows them to influence one another.
The result is a world where ancient fears can be connected to advanced threats, legends may contain unexpected truths and political disputes can affect entire civilizations.
As the long-awaited summit approaches, hopes for peace become increasingly fragile.
