That said, when Charles Stanley said, “When the enemy has a stronghold in your life, he’s established a pattern of thinking or behavior from which he can assault your inner being,” he is laying the foundational rule: know your enemy. But many of us are not soldiers by trade. So, how can the average believer fight against the devil and the unseen forces that are constantly attacking our peace?
Scripture gives us a direct weapon for this battle, commanding us: “We are destroying every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV). Today, two critical realities stand out. First, the power of evil is often subtle, creeping into our routines and leading us to live in ungodly ways, to be unkind or unloving, and ultimately setting us up for spiritual ruin. Furthermore, we set an example for others to follow through the upbringing of our children or in our roles of leadership, teaching others what to be or not to be. What kind of role models are we for those watching us?
Second, because evil and wrongdoing in this world are set directly against the Word of God, the Lord has equipped us with divine power and Scripture to fight back. We should be led to cut ourselves off from anything that pulls us out of God’s will, out of His light, and into the darkness of this world. It is truly a war, and the battleground is right here within our own hearts and minds. Ephesians 6:10-18 tells us to put on the whole armor of God: the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the Gospel, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.
In verse 11, Paul tells us that we can fight off the evil of this world if we clothe ourselves in God’s protection. Learning to trust and obey the guidance of the Holy Spirit begins with prayer, setting time aside to ask the Holy Spirit questions, and quietly waiting and listening for His answer. We need to read God’s Word, believe in Him, and put on His armor, because this is a fight you cannot afford to lose. So, read God’s Word and be a role model that inspires positive change, put on the armor, and receive God’s promises.
