The roots of the De-Ver mystery reach back to the sixteenth century and John De-Ver, a man remembered in the family accounts as violent and controlling. Margaret, April’s grandmother, eventually reveals that John’s first wife, Louise, endured terrible abuse and later died from her injuries. According to the story, Louise vowed on her deathbed to wander the Hall’s corridors for eternity in search of justice.
That alone would be enough to inspire generations of ghost stories.
But the deaths did not stop with Louise.
John later married Elizabeth, whose own marriage ended in scandal and betrayal. After John died suddenly, Elizabeth also died under mysterious circumstances. Margaret explains that similar unexplained endings followed many women who were born into or married into the De-Ver family.
Suddenly, an old family legend begins to look much harder to dismiss.
The Pendant That Changes Everything
Then there is the pendant.
Originally created as a symbol of the De-Ver family, the piece passes from one generation to another. To April, it is an elegant connection to her mother and ancestors.
To Margaret, it is a reminder of loss.
April’s mother was wearing the pendant when she died. Years later, April’s friend Alice secretly wears it and is killed in a horrific accident. Margaret’s fear finally overwhelms her and she tells April that she believes the pendant itself is cursed.
April refuses to accept such an explanation easily. After all, tragedy can happen without ghosts, curses or supernatural forces.
But how many coincidences are too many?

What makes The Inheritance so intriguing is that the danger is tied to the very things that should offer security: home, family, history and inheritance.
The Hall is not simply an old building. It is the keeper of generations of secrets. Even those who work around the estate have been warned to avoid entering it, with stories describing an evil presence that can supposedly be felt within its rooms and walls.
That creates the question hanging over April’s future: is she surrounded by frightened people who have allowed an ancient legend to control them or are they trying to save her from becoming the next De-Ver woman to suffer?
