In J. Zdybowicz’s historical fantasy series, plants are never simple background details. Herbs, roots, oils, and salves carry family history, practical value, spiritual meaning, and serious risk. They connect Apollina to generations of women who preserved their knowledge even when discovery could lead to punishment.
In Amulets for Salem, Apollina learns beside her mother and grandmother in a concealed healing shed. Shelves hold carefully labelled jars, infused oils, dried flowers, beeswax, and handwritten remedies. Yarrow and juniper berries are prepared for a wound salve, lavender is used in a preparation for burns, and Boswellia appears in a salve intended for joint pain. Peppermint and jewelweed are steeped in oil, while willow bark, hawthorn, and purple coneflower are gathered and stored for future use.
The work requires patience. Plants must be collected at the right time, dried correctly, and allowed to steep before they are ready. The family never purchases too many ingredients from one place because an unusual interest in herbs could attract attention. Their remedies are made to help, but in Salem, knowledge itself may be treated as evidence of witchcraft.
As the series continues into Talisman for Andover, Apollina’s understanding grows beyond ordinary salves and tinctures. Sage, lavender, mint, lemongrass, clove, juniper, tobacco, and other ingredients become part of protective and spiritual preparations. Salt, crushed eggshell, iron filings, graveyard dirt, storm water, and river water are chosen with care. Each ingredient has a purpose, and each preparation reflects the increasing danger faced by Apollina and her companions.
In Potions for Norfolk, her work becomes more demanding. Foxglove, sage, bone ash, tobacco leaf, and rainwater are used in a potion that links Apollina’s senses with Abraxas, allowing her to listen for rumours spreading through Norfolk. The preparation is powerful, but it places a heavy strain on her body and reminds readers that magic always carries a cost.
These ingredients help create a world that feels lived in and closely tied to the natural environment. They also reveal Apollina’s growth from a young student of family remedies into a protector willing to use everything she has learned.
Readers who enjoy hidden healing traditions, family grimoires, supernatural suspense, courageous women, and richly detailed historical settings will find much to admire throughout Amulets for Salem, Talisman for Andover, and Potions for Norfolk.
