Ways to Help a Person with Hearing Loss

FORTUNE Temp

It is sad to see and realize that not everyone in this world is as lucky as we are. You see, you might have got everything and still ask for more. But have you ever thought about those who might be living in a bubble? These could be the people who might be facing difficulties in every aspect of their lives. Be it hearing loss, being unable to listen, or a handicap, there are many things that many people are facing, which, thankfully, you and I are not.

And one spectrum on this is people with a hearing problem or issue. At home, at work, and out having fun, if you’re about to meet a person who might be struggling with a hearing aid, there are some ways that can help you stay in them loop like everyone else.

Secure the person’s attention and make sure to get your point across, even without speaking. Easier said than done, but try to make sure you have the person’s full attention before you start to speak, or the chances are they may miss part of what you’re saying. You can do this with a wave or a light touch on the shoulder. You need to face the person and look directly at them when you are talking to them or when they are talking to you. Try to maintain eye contact, even if there is an interpreter who translates your speech into their sign language. Remember that you are having a conversation with them; the interpreter is simply a facilitator. Also, don’t walk away or turn while you are speaking.

If you’re standing in front of a sunny window or a bright light is behind you, your face will be in shadow, which could make the impact deliberately slow and difficult to notice. So, that makes it harder for someone to see facial expressions and other conversational cues. If necessary, move so you face the light and face them directly. Moreover, if the person does not understand you, you can rephrase your message instead of repeating it. And if you are trying to speak loudly, it might not necessarily help, as a louder volume can distort words and won’t help them hear you, if not at least not damage their ears.

If the person is still unable to understand you, you can also use pen and paper to enhance understanding. You can express your thoughts and jot down what you were trying to say (of course, in their language they can understand) to help them get to your point. And in return, you can also ask them to put their words on paper.

If the person has some hearing, try to eliminate background noise, such as televisions or music. If you’re in a group, make sure only one person is talking at a time. If multiple conversations are going on, it can be difficult for someone who is hard of hearing to follow, so try to have one general conversation instead of multiple. You should not be assuming the person knows sign language just because they’re deaf. There are many ways for people who are hard of hearing to communicate. Sign language is only one of them. So it is better to ask them which communication method they prefer. If the phone rings or there is some other interruption, let them know. Someone who is completely deaf may not notice the interruption or the distraction. It is important that you keep them in the loop and understand them.

Speaking of understanding, while all of the above matters, what if you can actually feel what the person in front of you is experiencing?

Silent Strength: Willie’s Journey Through Deafness, Survival, and Second Chances is an inspiring true memoir that tells the remarkable story of a man who refused to let life’s greatest challenges define his future. Born with a life threatening heart defect, Willie Hedgeman began fighting for survival from his very first breath. As he grew older, he faced additional obstacles, including deafness, major health complications, and the emotional struggle of finding his place in a world that often misunderstood him.
