In many fantasy adventures, the hero’s closest companion exists mainly to offer support, provide encouragement or follow the chosen one into danger. Abigail, an Animist, plays a much richer role in The Chronicles of Arnalay: The Journey of the Lorfield by P.T. Lorin. Although she remains deeply loyal to Persona Lorfield, Abby is not defined by him. She carries her own grief, values, responsibilities and connection to the living world of Skylight.
From her earliest appearances, Abigail is shown as a protector of nature. Her identity as an Animist is connected to Ozway Forest, its animals and the vulnerable creatures threatened by hunters, greed and war. She does not simply admire the natural world from a distance. She feels responsible for defending it.
That devotion gives Abby an important purpose within the story. While other characters focus on kingdoms, political power, military conflict or prophecy, she reminds the group that the struggle for Skylight also concerns forests, wildlife, rivers and the lives of those who cannot defend themselves. Through her, the novel expands the meaning of heroism beyond battlefields and royal courts.
Abby also carries emotional wounds of her own. The loss of her father and the suffering she witnesses in Ozway influence the person she becomes. Rather than allowing grief to make her indifferent, she turns it into compassion. She commits herself to protecting life, even when that commitment requires personal sacrifice.
Her relationship with Persona reveals another side of her strength.
When Persona experiences devastating loss and begins questioning his identity, Abby does not offer easy answers. She listens. She stays near him when his pain becomes overwhelming, yet she also refuses to pretend that friendship can erase grief. Her honesty makes her support more meaningful.
Abby understands that comforting someone does not mean taking responsibility for every wound they carry. She cares deeply for Persona, but she maintains her own boundaries and remains faithful to her Animist vow. This gives their relationship emotional maturity. She is not simply waiting for the hero to choose her, nor is she present only to validate his decisions.
Instead, she challenges him to face the truth.
When anger threatens to pull Persona toward revenge, Abby helps him remember the difference between suffering and failure. She encourages him to seek answers, accept help and continue forward without denying what he has lost. At the same time, Persona respects Abby’s dedication to animals and the forest, recognizing that her life has a purpose independent of his journey.
Her courage also appears in moments of danger. Abby confronts corrupted magic, protects those around her and joins the indigo-marked companions on a mission that could reshape Skylight. She may be compassionate, but she is never passive. Her tenderness and fierceness exist together.
That balance makes Abigail Animist one of the novel’s most engaging characters.
Through Abby, P.T. Lorin shows that strength can take many forms. It can mean fighting an enemy, defending a threatened creature, speaking honestly to a grieving friend or remaining committed to one’s values when the world becomes chaotic.
